In the 1960s, Britain experienced a moral revolution, but this revolution wasn’t what you thought. The Hope of a World Transformed shows that, contrary to popular mythology, Britain’s Sixties wasn’t a mass popular revolution, but an elite invention, suddenly constructed in response to the fearful anxieties of the Cold War, which was only widely enacted by ‘ordinary people’ during the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s. Since British discussion had framed the early Cold War as a contest between Western Christianity and Soviet secularity, radical Christians were perfectly placed to shape the early stages of 1960s Britain’s moral revolution.
